Of Holland

Passed away March 1, 2003. She was 58 years old. She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Schiller. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, David and Heidi LaPlante and granddaughter, Emma of Rockford, Steven and Lisa LaPlante of Allendale; her mother, Josephine Schiller of Kalamazoo; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Brian and Danielle (Bean) Schiller of Bloomfield Hills, Greg Schiller of Denver, CO, and Marc and Mary Ellen (Smith) Schiller and their children, Bridget, Peter, and Hannah of Atlanta, GA; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. An educator for 35 years, the last 14 were spent teaching Latin and Mythology at West Ottawa High School in Holland, MI, where she retired in 2001. She was most recently employed at the Holland Sentinel. An avid traveler, she led many student trips abroad since the 1970's. She was also an administrator for the Michigan Junior Classical League for many years, helping promote the study of Latin and the Classics in schools. She was educated at Kalamazoo Central High School and earned her Master's Degree at the University of Michigan. A mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, teacher, and friend to everyone, she will be missed. Visitation for Mary Jo will be held on Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the Northwood Chapel Dykstra Funeral Homes, Inc. 295 Douglas Ave, Holland. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributions may be given to Hospice of Holland or the Alumni Assoc. of the University of Michigan.
