SMITH, Patricia

Patricia Louise “Pat” Elledge Byrd, 71, of Wappapello, Mo., died Sunday, June 28, 2015, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Pat was born Sept. 3, 1943, at Lowndes, Mo., daughter of Harry and Annie Smith nee’ Duniphan.

At a very young age, Pat lived at Lowndes before moving to Kalamazoo, Mich., where she spent the remainder of her youth and young adulthood. She gr...aduated high school at Kalamazoo. During her adult years, she moved back to southeast Missouri and attended college at Sikeston Technical Center, obtaining her LPN license, and at Three Rivers Community College, obtaining her Registered Nurse license. Pat later attended Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau and attained her Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing and her Masters of Science in Nursing. She lovingly worked many nursing jobs over the years and also held a teaching position at Sikeston Technical Center for the LPN program. She was also a nursing supervisor at Phelps In Home Care at Advance, Mo.

In her free time, Pat enjoyed quilting, traveling with her husband, playing solitaire and working crossword puzzles. She was of the Christian faith.

Pat is survived by her husband, Gary Byrd; two sons, Frank Sims and his wife, Gladys, of Wappapello, and Troy Cunningham and his wife, Tangie, of Fredericktown, Mo.; one daughter, Karen Ward of Doniphan; six grandchildren, Millicent Chitwood, Matthew Sims, Troy Cunningham Jr., Harley Cunningham, Nick Cunningham, and Brittany Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Clyde Smith; two sisters, Brenda Hensel and Betty Harding.

Visitation was held July 1 at Ruegg Funeral Home in Greenville, Mo. Services followed, also at the chapel in Greenville. Pastor Pete Ruble ministered to the family and Clay Phelps, Chuck Rogers, Scott Williams, Garrett Byrd, Dennis Middleton, Jerry Byrd served as pallbearers. Burial followed at McGee Chapel Cemetery.
